My Public Speaking Journey

And first place for table topics goes to (wait for it), Linda Franklin!

I could not believe my ears when I heard that won. Table topics is impromptu speaking. You have no idea what question you must answer and explain for a minute and a half. The unknown is scary; and, that is why I entered the contest. I wanted to work through my nerves of public speaking.

I used to give company-wide presentations and speak in front of sales teams all over the country. Through a series of layoffs and bad jobs, I lost my confidence. Have you ever had a supervisor nit-pick everything you said? That experience will paralyze you and crush your belief in yourself. Impostor syndrome (Did I really give those company-wide presentations without fear?), anxiety, and overall self-doubt envelop me during this time.

Over time, I rebuilt my confidence of speaking. I volunteered at a career networking group providing LinkedIn sessions in front of 20-30 people. I landed a new job with supportive colleagues and a supervisor who focused on my strengths. I began to feel like myself again. And I wanted to excel at public speaking again.

Enter: Toastmasters.

I remember my first meeting. I fearlessly volunteered to speak during table topics. My legs were shaking. I spoke for less than thirty seconds! I couldn’t wait to finish and sit back in my chair. But I kept at it. And 8 months later, here I am, the club winner. I am so proud of this accomplishment.

I was ready to relax and soak it all in. Then I heard, “Linda will represent our club at the area contest in a few weeks.”

Wait. I’m doing what?

Time to step into the fear-zone. How else can we push ourselves to improve and learn to be comfortable in our own skin unless we keep practicing?

If you want to improve your public speaking skills—and your confidence—I recommend joining your local toastmaster club. The only way to build confidence is to practice, practice, practice. I’m still learning, and I’m having fun doing so.

P.S. Follow up: I won first place in the area contest and moved to the district contest! This has been a thrill for me.
